How can I stay comfortable in the first 24 hours after oral surgery?
The first day often involves resting, using cold compresses as advised, keeping your head slightly elevated, sticking to soft cool foods, and following your surgeon's aftercare instructions. Taking it easy helps healing get started. Your oral surgeon will give you a personalized plan for comfort, so it's best to follow the specific guidance for your procedure.
Post-Operative Care
What does it mean if my tongue feels different after surgery?
Temporary changes in tongue sensation or taste can sometimes occur after lower wisdom teeth removal because of nearby nerves, and these usually improve as healing progresses. It's typically temporary. Everyone recovers a little differently. If the change persists or worries you, your oral surgeon can evaluate it and explain what to expect for your recovery.
Nerve Injury & Repair
Is numbness after wisdom teeth removal permanent?
In most cases, any numbness or altered sensation after lower wisdom teeth removal is temporary and improves over time as the area heals. Lasting changes are uncommon. Recovery of sensation varies from person to person. If numbness persists longer than expected, it's worth discussing with your oral surgeon, who can monitor it and explain what's typical.

What is dry socket?
Dry socket, also called alveolar osteitis, can happen after a tooth extraction if the protective blood clot in the socket is lost or doesn't form properly, leaving the underlying bone and nerves exposed. It's known for being uncomfortable. It's not the same as infection. Your oral surgeon can explain it further and tell you how to lower your chances.

What is corrective jaw (orthognathic) surgery?
Corrective jaw surgery, also called orthognathic surgery, repositions the upper jaw, lower jaw, or both to improve how the jaws and teeth fit and function. It's often used for significant bite or alignment concerns that braces alone can't fully address. Plans are highly individual. Your oral surgeon can explain whether and how it might apply to you.

Will I feel anything during oral surgery with anesthesia?
With proper numbing or sedation, most people don't feel pain during oral surgery, though you might notice pressure or movement with lighter forms of anesthesia. With deeper sedation or general anesthesia, people typically remember little or nothing. Your oral surgeon will explain what to expect for the type of anesthesia planned for your procedure.
